We have a strong commitment to helping the local community while motivating the employees of Albrite Lighting and E.B. Horsman & Son to increase their efforts in helping society. One example of this is continuous fundraising activities alongside the company’s profit donations to BC Children’s Hospital.
Continuous fundraising activities happen throughout the year involving our employees and customers to give back to the community. BC Children’s Hospital will continue to be the primary foundation of support for 2016.
Albrite Lighting and E.B. Horsman & Son are active partners with BC Hydro and other Power Smart Programs. Our familiarity and involvement with the program allows us to provide value added services to our customers looking to reduce their power consumption.
We actively promote and support suppliers of green technology products. This aligns with our lighting control strategy includes product sales of occupancy sensors and lighting controls as well as helps our customers understand the requirements of ASHRAE 90.1 2010.
As a division of E.B. Horsman & Son, we are proud supporters of the Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) scholarship program which has been supporting students for over 19 years. In 2014, EFC and its members and participants will provide students with $113,000 in funding across 56 scholarships. We have announced that we will be supporting the EFC scholarship program in 2015 with a $3500 commitment.
This will help us with challenges around talent management, succession planning and general market awareness in both British Columbia and Alberta. Our scholarship will have a Western Canada focus and will be for a Technical Program in Electrical, Instrumentation, or Building Technologies.
We are a Product Care Advisory Committee Member (PCA). PCA currently operates lamp product stewardship programs in three provinces: British Columbia (BC), Manitoba (MB) and Québec (QC). The BC and MB programs are known as LightRecycle while the QC program is known as RecycFluo.
Additionally our participation in the Advisory Committee allows us to be in the development and implementation process for any new programs or changes to existing programs and therefore ensuring they meet the needs of our business. Furthermore, it ensures we are at the leading edge of these programs and are viewed as an Industry Leader for knowledge and implementation of these programs.
We have undertaken various initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint. Our Warehouse management systems & ERP streamlining allows us to operate our Central distribution warehouse in a nearly paperless environment.
The Central distribution warehouse has also set up byproduct recycling/reduction by utilizing reusable shipping totes, crates and mailbags. The warehouse team appropriately disposes of over 90% of plastic and cardboard. We have installed a head office trash compacter to reduce the number of truckloads of recyclable cardboard at the Central distribution warehouse. Lighting fixtures, lamps and metal are also recycled at both the Central Distribution warehouse and warehouses throughout the company.
Over the past year we have donated demonstration samples for training aids to technical schools and organizations such as Habitat for Humanity.
